THIS
BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE... I HOPE IT DOES FOR YOU WHAT IT DID
FOR ME.
Why
did it change my life? Because I wrote it. What's more important
is that I wrote it on something many of us love: Hip-Hop
Culture. I wrote this book during the down times of
my life and it became my therapy. What did I write about? Well
I turned and asked myself a serious question. This is the question
all serious fans ask ourselves at some point. Why do I love
Hip-Hop? I think I love Hip Hop because it was the first music
to really speak to me. Made by people I knew, or could relate
to. When most kids were out trying to be professional football
players or street ball kings, I was in my room, with a $69.00
mixer and two mis-matched turntables being hypnotized by The Cold
Crush Bros., Egyptian Lover, Soul Sonic Force, Wreckin' Cru,
Too Short, Cybotron, Run DMC, Mantronix and Just Ice.
"Adisa
is one of the only cats I know that understands how Hip-Hop
relates to both the ancient past and the far future."
-DJ
Vlad, "Westcoast Mixtape King"
I
wrote my first article in 1987 for
my highschool newspaper. I called a then very unknown
rapper named Eazy E for
an interview. As luck would have it, I'd become aquainted
with him. One time he hooked me up with tickets to
see JJ Fad, 2 Live Crew, and
EPMD at the Circle Star (you gotta be old school
folks from the Bay Area to remember the Circle Star).
These events burned into my memory, and stay with me
in full clarity till this day.
Not
long after that I'd meet Chuck D while
lecturing at San Francisco State University. I
was especially lucky on that day because, while
waiting to get an autograph, I litterally bumped
into a guy holding a new magazine- that magazine
was called The Source and
the guy's name was James Bernard - he motivated
me to continue writing over the years. |

"The
Bishop's writings were always a futurist's guide into how
powerful the Hip- Hop Movement has and will become."
-Yogafrog,
Thud Rumble Ltd.
Along
the way, God gave me the fortune to
run into all kinds of people. From Tupac,
Paris, Q-Tip, Russell Simmons and Everlast to Mystic, Ultimate
Fighting Champion Royce Gracie, and Rakaa from Dilated Peoples.
It's been a great journey. Some of these folks I met once;
some remained friends.
Luckily,
I developed an archive of
interviews and articles from these meetings. Some of
these interviews and articles went on to be printed in
magazines like The Source, Rap
Pages, VIBE, 4080, Bomb Magazine and other publications.
I wrote about Hip Hop, Islam, Eastern Philosophy, martial
arts, and all types of political and social issues. Some
of it I kept to myself in a journal. Some I did not dare
write about as it was too painful. I stopped writing
for a while. Took a job with a dot com, got laid off,
and became bitter.
My
friends who knew me encouraged me to keep writing. So
I picked up the pen again. But what was spilling onto the
pages was more reflections on my life's journey than just
interivews. After a few years of that, my wife and kids
moved into our first home. While unpacking, I found a box
of articles my wife had packed away during the move. I
combed through them, called my friend Ali Asadullah (formerly
Jason Dicks) to help edit and organize them and put together
what I think is a journal on Hip Hop and social and political
issues over the last 10 years - "Lyrical
Swords Vol 1: Hip Hop and Politics in the Mix".
These are snippets in the life of hip-hop at various times.
I hope you feel what I felt when I wrote them. I think
these interviews and stories will move you.
"Adisa
Banjoko is a provocative, thoughtful, journalist who brings
forth challenging insights that force's one to come correct.
He's a breath of fresh air, at a time when much around
us is stale and in need of rejuvenation."

Davey D, Hip- Hop Historian
